There are two types of fire protection systems, passive and active, that work together to provide maximum fire protection. Passive fire protection (PFP) materials are built right into the building and include fire retardant materials such as cinderblocks instead of wood, fire doors, fire dampers, and fire resistant coatings. The objective of PFP materials is to contain the fire and prevent the spread of smoke and fire into other parts of the building. PFP materials assist in preventing more damage and putting fires out faster.
 
Passive fire materials are just as important as active fire protection systems, which include fire detection, suppression, and ventilation. Together, passive and active fire protection materials maximize protection in commercial buildings.
