Smoke detectors using ionization technology work by using a small amount of radioactive material that is sandwiched inside two electrically charged plates. This allows the air to be ionized, which causes a current to flow between both plates. Smoke entering the chamber disrupts this ion flow. The alert is set off when the current flow decreases.
