What is the difference between a fire alarm and a smoke detector?

Fire alarms and smoke detectors are part of a fire alarm system, but each serves its own purpose.

Fire alarm – A fire alarm is a system of devices and sensors that are strategically placed throughout a commercial building or residential dwelling that will detect and alert to the presence of a fire. Fire alarms can either be triggered manually once a fire hazard has been detected, or more advanced alarms are automated and do not require manual intervention.

Smoke detectors – Smoke detectors can detect minuscule smoke particles in the air which trigger the detector to sound a very loud alarm to alert building occupants. The two main types of smoke detectors are photoelectric and ionization. Both types of smoke detectors are highly sensitive and dependable at detecting smoke in the air.
