Are fire alarm systems required with fire sprinkler systems?
Your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and the International Building Code (IBC) define the required life and safety protection systems based on a structure’s occupancy. If your commercial building has an occupancy that mandates a system in place that will alert occupants of a fire emergency, then you are required to have a commercial alarm system in your building.
Fire sprinkler systems are in place to protect a structure, not its occupants. Not every business is mandated to implement a fire alarm system if it’s not required by the occupancy status. But most new construction comes fitted with alarms and complete fire protection systems.
