Does the Building Code require BDAs for Police and Fire Departments?

The building code does require radio coverage for Emergency Responders, and the International Fire Code, IFC, has regulated radio coverage within commercial buildings since 2009. The AHJ decides which specific Emergency Responder agencies should be included within the system, but it typically includes Police, EMS, Fire, and Fire Mutual Aid. Recent changes in IFC 2021 definitions require 99% signal strength in all critical areas of a commercial building.

Contact HRSS to learn more about the Notifier® BDA and how you can ensure your building’s Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems, ERCES, system is code-compliant.
