How Often Do Fire Extinguishers Need to be Inspected?
Dry Chemical Extinguishers are rated to extinguish fires that are Class A, B, and C, whereas Dry Powder Extinguishers are rated as Class D and K. All fire extinguishers are required for inspection when installed and on an ongoing monthly basis. Inspections must be done by someone who is certified to conduct inspections and will cover the following areas:
- Make sure the extinguisher is full
- Ensure no damage could cause it to malfunction and it is free of corrosion and rust
- Verify it is code compliant
- Confirm its placement and location are easily accessible
- Give peace of mind that the extinguisher is in proper working order
Fire extinguishers must also be inspected annually by a licensed provider, with other types of extinguishers requiring further inspection upon the 6-year mark.
