What are Emergency Control Functions?

The security and protection of your business are of the utmost importance, and ensuring your commercial fire alarm system is working properly can mean life or death. A critical component of your fire alarm system is the emergency control functions, which allow communication with the fire alarm control panel (FACP).

The emergency control functions operate by sending signals to different areas of the building if they need to be shut down or restricted to stop smoke or fire from spreading. Components of the emergency control functions include:

Relay – allows the fire alarm control panel to control and operate the emergency control functions of a system.

Smoke control – used primarily in larger commercial buildings, the system draws heat and smoke away from the point of origin so the fire can be extinguished quickly.

Fire Doors – fire doors play a major role in a building’s fire safety system by providing a barrier and keeping the fire contained in one room or area. The fire doors are also designed to help keep smoke from spreading throughout the building and are usually operated by an electro-magnet that will automatically close them when an alarm is triggered.

Elevator Recall -The elevators of a building are vulnerable areas during a fire because the shaft provides an open passage from the top of the building all the way down to the lowest point. In a fire emergency, the fire alarm control panel sends a signal to the elevators instructing it to either shutdown or recall. The data collected from the fire alarm system will tell the elevators which floors should be avoided, and which floors are safe to let out occupants for a safe evacuation.
