What are the types of alarm-initiating devices?

Smoke alarm initiating devices either manually or automatically alert occupants to an emergency by signaling an alarm to initiate a response from fire alarm equipment or occupants. Devices can be part of an addressable system which allows the control panel to pinpoint the exact location of the alert, or they can be non-addressable from a conventional system that may have separate zones but not specific location identification.
Initiating devices can be manual, like the manual pull station, or they can be automatic. Automatic alarm initiating devices include:

  • Smoke detectors
  • Gas and CO detectors
  • Beam detectors
  • Duct detectors
  • Heat detectors
  • Automatic sprinklers
  • Tamper switches
