What Must Be Included in a Building’s Fire Safety Plan?

Commercial buildings must have a fire safety plan to assist in preventing loss of life in the event of a fire. This plan helps to address possible causes of a fire and what to do if a fire breaks out.

A fire safety plan will typically cover:
How to prevent a fire – this is the most important step of a fire safety plan and includes information such as ensuring all machinery that emits heat is free and clear of materials and debris. It also covers the proper care of any flammable materials and to keep vents clear.

How to respond to a fire
– the priority is to make sure everyone gets out of the building safely and to protect the building from damage. There should always be multiple escape routes, so that no one gets trapped in a fire. Communication with the local fire department is a vital part of the fire safety plan as well.

Training employees – all employees should receive training regularly on what action to take in the case of a fire. This step should cover the proper use of fire extinguishers and sounding the fire alarm to alert building occupants.

HRSS provides commercial fire alarm system design, consultation, UL-listed equipment and assists our customers with a code-compliant building fire safety plan.
