Where are Fire Extinguishers Required in a Commercial Building?

Fire extinguishers are required by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to be placed in commercial buildings in areas that are easily accessible, visible, and in normal paths of travel. They must also be placed near all exits of the building and cannot be covered by debris or clutter.

Fire extinguishers are available in different sizes and have different placement requirements. Fire extinguishers that weigh less than 40 lbs. must be placed a minimum of 4 inches from the ground, with the top of the extinguisher being no more than 5 feet from the ground. Fire extinguishers weighing over 40 lbs. must be placed a minimum of 4 inches off the ground, with the top of the extinguisher being no more than 3.5 feet off the ground. All fire extinguishers must be installed with their operating instructions facing outwards.
