Ionization

Smoke detectors using ionization technology work by using a small amount of radioactive material that is sandwiched inside two electrically charged plates. This allows the air to be ionized, which causes a current to flow between both plates. Smoke entering the chamber disrupts this ion flow. The alert is set off when the current flow decreases. However, they do not sound an alarm until there is enough smoke to reach the sensor.
