Photoelectric

Photoelectric smoke detectors work by projecting a steady, concentrated beam of light onto a mirror from a source of LED light that is pointed away from the sensor and directly into a sensing chamber. The light that bounces onto the light sensor is disrupted when smoke reaches the chamber, scattering light in all directions and sounding the alarm. Smoke can be detected by photoelectric smoke detectors even before a fire is visible.
