Why is fire safety equipment red?

There is a reason why all fire safety equipment and signage are in the color red. ANSI is an organization that supervises standards, although it does not enforce rules. ANSI defines that red should be the color used for all signs or labels that signify danger.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, requires that red is used as the standard color for all fire equipment and signage and enforces the standards so that businesses will incorporate this mandate into their visual safety program. Red signage should be used to alert people of dangers related to fire and flammable objects with a flashpoint below 80°F and for all labeling of fire protection equipment.

Signs that alert of fire, risk of fire, or signify danger and potentially lethal consequences should always be in red. When combined with white lettering, fire safety signs provide higher visibility to alert all occupants of danger. Businesses have countless fire protection systems and emergency egress areas that must be visibly marked, such as:

  • Fire alarms
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Fire exits
  • Fire doors
  • Evacuation areas
  • Fire lanes for parking lots

With the same color red used to signify fire hazards and protective equipment, it is more likely that all employees and visitors will recognize the meaning of the signs and equipment to provide a safer facility.
