Quick Reference to Aspirating Smoke Detectors

An aspirating smoke detector system (ASD) is a key component to your commercial fire safety system where air is drawn into a central detection chamber through a system of pipes to identify smoke. It works by detection of the light scatter that is caused by the smoke particles within the chamber. Usually, an ASD system can detect the presence of smoke before it can be seen and typically requires a fan so air can be drawn into the system of pipes.

ASD Design and Benefits

One of the main design elements of the ASD system is its use of a sampling pipe that has several bore holes. The sampling pipe filters the air which removes any dust or contaminants to prevent false alarms and processes the air with a very sensitive laser. When smoke is detected, the alarm system is triggered sending a signal to the central monitoring facility in a matter of seconds.

ASD systems differ from passive smoke detection systems because they actively bring air through holes in the pipe system that is installed throughout the area of protection. ASD systems also employ monitoring so if the system’s smoke detection ability is compromised, an alert is instantly triggered.

ASD alarms have multiple different levels of alarm, which means it can alert to an emergency very early on in the event. ASD alarm systems can also be configured to be highly sensitive or less sensitive, depending on your building’s requirements or needs. ASD detectors are best suited for environments that are non-volatile and can even be used to detect if computer components are overheating in an office setting inside of a cabinet.

ASD Placement

ASD detectors are best used in areas where there are goods that are highly susceptible to fire, such as flammable materials or liquids. Regular smoke detectors often detect the fire or danger after it has been smoldering for some time because it takes a little while for the smoke to reach the ceiling. An ASD detection unit can detect the danger before it is noticed by personnel or building occupants when configured to high sensitivity.

ASD detectors are best in clean areas; however, they can easily be used in dusty areas if the proper design, maintenance, and installation process is followed.
